That’s So Gluten Free Makeup

Did you know there is gluten in makeup?

Cosmetics are sometimes made / produced with oils, extracts, and flours derived from wheat, barley, and rye! Gluten in cosmetics is probably not the first thing you think of when you are worrying about cross-contact and/or getting glutened. From the research I have done, it is advised to avoid lipstick and lip gloss as they more than likely contain ingredients like wheat germ or barley extract. Those products are advised to avoid as they are more likely to be ingested.

However, for me personally, I’m very picky to not only what food I put in my body, but also to what products I put on my body, especially with beauty products (more than just lipstick and lip gloss). Unfortunately, lot of brands do not mix well with my skin!

As you may or may not know, gluten can be extremely sneaky and hide behind many different names. Below is a list of some the ingredients that gluten can hide in your beauty products:

·       Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour

·       Crosspolymer

·       Cyclodextrin

·       Dextrin

·       Dextrin Palmitate

·       Hordeum Volgare

·       Hydrolyzed Malt Extract

·       Hydrolyzed Oat Flour

·       Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

·       Hydrolyzed Wheat Flour

·       Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch

·       Secale Cereale

·       Wheat Amino Acids

·       Wheat Germ Glyceride

Utilizing gluten free beauty products is a personal decision for those living with or without celiac disease. For me, I personally utilize BeautyCounter as I’ve researched their products, trust their products and support their mission. Their mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. They want you to feel completely confident in your daily routine, so every one of our innovative and high-performing products is made with an industry-leading standard of safety. Not only are they advocating for better and safer beauty standards, but they are educating others while doing so.

So am I using BeautyCounter products because they offer gluten free products? Yes and no. I am using BeautyCounter products because I prefer their ingredients and how transparent they are as that helps me understand what I am putting on my skin / body. I due tend to prefer products that are gluten free as they are typically cleaner and not filled with a bunch of gunk. However, that statement is not always true as we know with gluten free foods there is a lot of gunk in them and not always clean or better for you. My choice of beauty products and food comes with a lot of research on what is best for my body. I encourage every single person to do their research and choose what is best for them.

OK. Now back to gluten free makeup — yes, BeautyCounter may not be specifically labeled as gluten free, but they are very transparent in what ingredients go into their products and have an allergen list of products that have been tested for specific allergens. I have not had any issues utilizing any of their products and my skin has been the best it has in years [thank you diet, supplements, vitamins, and clean beauty products].

My go-to / staple products are:

I have utilized BeautyCounter over the last three years and recently became a consultant for them as I believe in their mission.
