That’s So Cabinet

May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month, so I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about a company that I have been in communications with for a few months now and think it is one those in the celiac community should be aware of.

Cabinet is a company I have been talking to for over 5 months in regard to their mission and what they are offering to the gluten free and celiac communities. This company was built to provide high-quality and fairly priced medicines with the mission of bringing fair pricing, convenience, and information to people around every day, essential medicines.

Did you know that there are 3 drug recalls every single day? Cabinet is the first health care company to conduct batch-level quality testing on every single product. 100% verified free of carcinogens, toxins, gluten, and other harmful substances. I really appreciate the company’s transparency when it comes to their sustainability and sourcing strategies. One of the biggest things I appreciate is their dedication to serving the celiac and gluten intolerant communities. They understand how difficult it is to find safe medications and products that us in the community can trust. How do they go about making sure we understand that the medications are safe? Well, they make sure every single bottle is verified gluten free through an independent 3rd party lab. All of their products meet or exceed the less than 20 ppm gluten regulation set by the FDA. Cabinet is official partners with the Celiac Disease Foundation. Read more about the partnership here

Why am I bringing this company to your attention? As you may already know gluten-free claims on foods and supplements are regulated by the FDA (I talk about this in detail here). However, similar laws are not in place for labeling gluten in medications, although there have been a few proposed bills to do just that.

Gluten (sneaky little thing) can be used and is used in the excipients (sweeteners, binders, coating agents, etc.)  of medication. The excipients in this situation are the binders that hold the medicine together. It is important for those living with celiac disease to be aware of what binders are in the medicine they are taking as:

  • There are currently no requirements for labeling gluten and/or common allergens found in drug ingredients!

  • There are no specific precautions for individuals with celiac disease in labeling!

  • Potential sources of gluten in medications are not well-recognized by healthcare professional – I have gotten a lot of blank stares when I have told pharmacist and/or doctors that I need to make sure the medication they prescribed me was gluten free ( #thatssoceliac ).

  • There are several types of excipients, which some of them may contain gluten.

  • The generic form of a medication may use different excipients than the brand name drug. So even if the brand name is determined to be gluten-free, the gluten-free status of each generic may not be and must be verified.

The manufacturer should also be able to help you determine if the medication you will be taking is gluten-free or if it is not safe for people with celiac disease. However, I have not had the best experience with speaking with manufactures about their ingredients, which is one of the reasons I do not typically utilize over the counter medications. Plus, since starting to approach my health from a wholistic and integrative standpoint, I stay away from them unless it is absolutely necessary for me to take. If I do need to take OTC medicine, then I know I have a trusted place to buy from which is Cabinet Medicine. I appreciate all the Cabinet is doing to not only bring awareness to celiac disease, but also how those living with the autoimmune disease have to think more about the food we consume.
